Troubleshooting SmallWorld broadband speed issues

SmallWorld Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your SmallWorld broadband connection, we recommend that you run a SmallWorld Broadband Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

It is also a good idea find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you have subscribed to from SmallWorld.

You can get this information by checking a SmallWorld broadband bill, your SmallWorld contract or by contacting SmallWorld.

Likely causes of SmallWorld’s slow broadband performance

Is it your SmallWorld broadband that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to check the number of applications are currently running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU and as opposed to a problem with SmallWorld’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory usage.

On other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully should terminate all applications that may be using up your systems resources.

Re-run the SmallWorld Speed checker on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more info to help determine if the problem lies with your device or the SmallWorld internet connection.

Is your wireless network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless and not the SmallWorld broadband connection.

You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by connecting your PC directly into the SmallWorld broadband router with a network cable and then run the SmallWorld Speed checker again.

If the result improves when you are connected using an ethernet cable, this proves that the problem may be with the Wifi network.

A few other things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wifi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when your are standing directly in-front of the SmallWorld internet router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be using your wireless network and eating up all the SmallWorld bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your SmallWorld broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities over your SmallWorld broadband connection.

SmallWorld wireless Lagging

There are three applications that you can potentially use to scan your wireless network to check who is connected:

The above apps analyse your Wifi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wifi network booster for my SmallWorld broadband?

You may discover that you have Wifi coverage gaps at your home, a Wifi extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.

The Wi-Fi network extender picks up the existing Wifi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the Wifi booster near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from your SmallWorld internet router is becoming weaker.

Position it approximately where your wireless network signal drops down to 2 bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to try and establish where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the SmallWorld broadband router?

SmallWorld broadband router upgrade

The SmallWorld and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that your SmallWorld broadband router is running on the latest software.

Most SmallWorld broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging on the SmallWorld broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, contact SmallWorld and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to SmallWorld to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for SmallWorld broadband performance issues in your area and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact SmallWorld who will be able to run the appropriate line tests to see if there is a fault on the SmallWorld broadband connection.

Is it due to SmallWorld broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the SmallWorld broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. weekends or during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to SmallWorld to check your guaranteed speed.
