Troubleshooting Surfdial internet performance issues

Surfdial Internet speed test - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Surfdial internet connection, we recommend that you run a Surfdial Internet Speedtest to confirm your current connection speed.

You may also want to confirm the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from Surfdial.

You can get this information by checking your Surfdial broadband bill, your Surfdial contract or by contacting Surfdial.

Likely causes of Surfdial’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Surfdial internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider the number of apps are currently running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with Surfdial’s internet connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM usage.

On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all apps that may have been using up your systems resources.

Run the Surfdial Speed test on your personal computer and your phone to check how the results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some information to work with in terms of if the problem is with your device or the Surfdial internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network the issue?

The cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network and not the Surfdial internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by connecting your computer directly into the Surfdial broadband router using a network cable and run the Surfdial Speedtest again.

If the speed test result is better when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the issue may be with the internal wireless network.

A number of things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when your are stood right infront of the Surfdial broadband router?

Who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your wireless network and using up all your Surfdial speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your Surfdial internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities on your Surfdial broadband connection.

Surfdial WiFi Lagging

Here are three apps to utlise to scan your Wifi network to see who is connected:

The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a wireless booster for my Surfdial broadband?

You may discover that there are Wi-Fi black holes at your property, a wireless network extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best solution to increase your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing Wifi signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to extend it’s reach.

Position the Wifi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from your Surfdial broadband router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your wireless network signal is dropping down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to determine where this is.

When did you last upgrade the Surfdial broadband router?

Surfdial ISP router upgrade

The Surfdial and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Surfdial broadband internet router is running on the latest software.

Most Surfdial broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging into the Surfdial broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Surfdial and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it’s worth speaking to Surfdial to request for a router upgrade.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Surfdial broadband performance problems in your home and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is applicable to you, contact Surfdial who should be able to run the appropriate connection tests to see if there is a issue on the Surfdial broadband line.

Is the issue due to Surfdial broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Surfdial internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g over weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to Surfdial to find out your minimum speed.
