Common causes of Surfdial slow internet speed

Is it your Surfdial broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many applications are currently running on your device that could be utilising your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Surfdial internet bandwidth.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.

On any other device you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the Surfdial speed test on your computer and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your device or the Surfdial broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network connection the problem?

The cause of the problem could be your Wi-Fi network connection and not the Surfdial broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your computer directly into the Surfdial broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Surfdial speed test again.

If performance improves when you are connected by a network cable then this proves that the problem could be with the Wi-Fi network connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your wireless signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are stood directly in-front of the Surfdial broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wi-Fi network?

Neighbors could be using your Wifii network and eating up all your Surfdial bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my Surfdial broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing wireless signal as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the Wifi network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wifi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the Surfdial broadband router is becoming weak.  Approxiametly where your wireless signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Surfdial broadband router?

The Surfdial and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some end user facing and others internal).  Ensure that the Surfdial broadband router has the latest software.

Most Surfdial broadband routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the Surfdial broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, contact Surfdial and they will be able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the Surfdial router model you have.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s worth talking to Surfdial to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the fault external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Surfdial broadband performance issue in your home and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Surfdial who will be able to conduct the relevant connection tests to check if there is a problem on the Surfdial broadband line.

Is it due to Surfdial Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Surfdial internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. over weekends and during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact your Surfdial to find out if the service you subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
