Troubleshooting Surfdial broadband performance issues

Surfdial Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your Surfdial broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Surfdial Broadband Speed Test to benchmark your current broadband speed.

You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from Surfdial.

You can find this information by checking a Surfdial broadband bill, your Surfdial contract or by contacting Surfdial.

Likely causes of Surfdial’s slow internet speed

Is it your Surfdial broadband that is slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance problem may be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Surfdial’s internet connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilisation.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all apps that may be using up your device resources.

Run the Surfdial Speed test on your PC and your mobile to see how the results differ between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you more information to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the Surfdial internet connection.

Is your wireless network the reason for the issues?

The cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network and not the Surfdial broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network by connecting your PC directly to the Surfdial broadband router with a network cable and then run the Surfdial Speed checker again.

If the speed is better when you’re connected by a network cable, this shows that the issue could be with the Wifi.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is the wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are standing directly in-front of the Surfdial internet router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to change it.

Others could be on your Wifi network and eating up all the Surfdial speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Surfdial broadband connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities using your Surfdial internet connection.

Surfdial wireless not working

Here are 3 apps that you can potentially utlise to analyze your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above software scan your wireless network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my Surfdial broadband?

You may discover that you have wireless black spots in your house, a Wifi extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The Wifi extender picks up the existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Place the Wifi network extender where your Wifi network signal from the Surfdial internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your wireless network signal drops down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to determine where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Surfdial broadband router?

Surfdial router upgrade

The Surfdial and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Surfdial broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

Most Surfdial broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the Surfdial broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Surfdial and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it may be worth talking to Surfdial to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Surfdial broadband performance problems in your home and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Surfdial who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to see if there is a issue on the Surfdial internet connection.

Is the issue due to Surfdial broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Surfdial internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to Surfdial to check your guaranteed speed.
