How to troubleshoot Surfdial broadband performance problems
Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Surfdial internet connection, we recommend that you run a Surfdial Broadband Speedtest to confirm your current connection speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from Surfdial.
You can get this info by checking your Surfdial broadband bill, your Surfdial contract or by contacting Surfdial.
Probable causes of Surfdial’s slow internet speed
Is it your Surfdial internet connection that is slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.
The speed problem may be due to the over-utilization of your system resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Surfdial’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilisation.
On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been hogging system resources.
Re-run the Surfdial Speed test on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more info to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the Surfdial broadband connection.

Is your Wifi the cause of the issue?
The cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi as opposed to the Surfdial broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your computer directly to the Surfdial broadband router with a network cable and then run the Surfdial Speed checker again.
If the speed test result is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this indicates that the issue may be with the Wifi network.
A number of things to check:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your speed get better when your are stood right infront of the Surfdial broadband router?
Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be on your wireless network and eating up all your Surfdial speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Surfdial broadband connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities using your Surfdial internet connection.
There are 3 apps to use to analyse your Wifi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a wireless network booster for my Surfdial broadband?
If you discover that you have wireless black spots at your home, a Wifi network extender also known as a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to boost your wireless signal to cover any black holes.
The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Position the Wi-Fi network extender near the position where your wireless signal from the Surfdial internet router is becoming weaker.
Place it approximately where your wireless signal is dropping down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a mobile phone to find where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Surfdial broadband router?
The Surfdial and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that your Surfdial broadband internet router is running on the most up to date software.
Most Surfdial internet routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the Surfdial broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the update.
If you can’t do this, contact Surfdial and they will be able to do this for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it is worth speaking to Surfdial to request for a router upgrade.
Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for Surfdial broadband performance issues in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact Surfdial who should be able to carry out the relevant line tests to see if there is a issue on the Surfdial internet connection.
Is the issue due to Surfdial Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the Surfdial internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g weekends and during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should contact Surfdial to check your guaranteed speed.
