How to troubleshoot Timico broadband internet speed

Timico Internet speed test - Slow broadband speedBefore you start troubleshooting the performance of your Timico broadband connection, you firstly need to run the Timico Internet Broadband Speed Test and also confirm what Upload and Download speed you are paying for.

You can get this info by checking your Timico bill or contact Timico to confirm this info.

Common causes of Timico slow internet speed

Is it the Timico broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device that could be utilising your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Timico internet bandwidth.

If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to check your processor and memory usage.

On any other device you should try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may be running in the background.

Re-run the Timico speed checker on your PC and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of if the problem lies with your device or the Timico internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network connection the problem?

The cause of the problem could be your Wifi network connection and not the Timico broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network network being the cause of the issue by connecting your PC directly into the Timico broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Timico speed test again.

If performance is better when you are connected using an ethernet cable then this proves that the issue may be with your Wi-Fi network connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your wireless network signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the Timico broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest Wifi network?

Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fii network and using up all your Timico bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.

There are 2 applications that you can use to scan your wireless network to check who is connected:

Both applications will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the connected devices.

Check out this tutorial on how to use both applications

Do I need a Wifi network Booster for my Timico broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender aka a wireless Booster is the fix to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the Wifi signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the Timico broadband router is becoming weak.  Approxiametly where your Wifi network signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Timico broadband router?

The Timico and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that the Timico broadband router has the latest software.

Most Timico broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the Timico broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you cannot do this, contact Timico and they will be able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the Timico router model you have.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it is worth talking to Timico to request for a router upgrade.

Is the issue external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Timico broadband performance problem in your home and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Timico who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection tests to see if there is a issue on the Timico broadband connection.

Is it due to Timico Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the Timico internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g weekends and during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your Timico to find out if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your Timico internet connection

After the problem has been resolved either by yourself or Timico, retest your broadband connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla broadband speedtester to ensure the problem is resolved.
