How to troubleshoot Tollon internet speed problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Tollon internet connection, we suggest that you perform a Tollon Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
It is a good idea to also confirm the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Tollon.
You can find this info by checking your Tollon broadband bill, your Tollon contract or by contacting Tollon.
Potential causes of Tollon’s slow internet speed
Is it your Tollon internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check how many applications are currently running on your device.
The speed issue could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU and not an issue with Tollon’s broadband connection.
If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM usage.
On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully will terminate all apps that may have been hogging your device resources.
Run the Tollon Speed checker on your personal computer and your phone to check how the results compare between the two devices.
Hopefully this should give you more information to work with in terms of if the issue is with your device or the Tollon internet connection.

Is the Wifi network the problem?
The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless and not the Tollon broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the Tollon broadband router with a network cable and run the Tollon Speedtest again.
If the speed test result is better when you are connected by a network cable, this proves that the problem may be with your wireless network.
A number of things to check:
- Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is your wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does your speed improve when you’re standing directly infront of the Tollon internet router?
Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.
Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and using up all your Tollon bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Tollon broadband connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities using your Tollon internet connection.
Here are three apps that you can potentially use to analyse your Wifi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- Wireless scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software will scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Should I get a wireless network booster for my Tollon broadband?
If you find that you have wireless black holes at your house, a Wifi network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any black holes.
The Wifi network booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from your Tollon broadband router is becoming weaker.
Position it near where your wireless signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Tollon broadband router?
The Tollon and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that your Tollon internet router is running on the most up to date software.
The majority of Tollon broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the Tollon broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact Tollon and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to Tollon to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Tollon broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Tollon who should be able to conduct the appropriate connection checks to see if there is a problem on the Tollon internet connection.
Is the issue because of Tollon broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the Tollon broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g weekends and evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should speak to Tollon to check your minimum speed.
