Troubleshooting UKO2 internet performance problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your UKO2 internet connection, we recommend that you run a UKO2 Broadband Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.
You may also want to confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you have subscribed to from UKO2.
You can find this info by checking a UKO2 broadband bill, your UKO2 contract or by contacting UKO2.
Possible causes of UKO2’s slow broadband speed
Is it your UKO2 internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to check how many apps are running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to the over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g RAM/CPU and as opposed to a problem with UKO2’s broadband connection.
If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory usage.
On other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may be using up your systems resources.
Re-run the UKO2 Speedtest on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the results differ between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should give you some info to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the UKO2 broadband connection.

Is the Wi-Fi network the cause of the performance issue?
The root cause of the performance problem could be your Wi-Fi network and not the UKO2 broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your PC directly to the UKO2 broadband router with a network cable and then run the UKO2 Speed checker again.
If the speed test result is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this indicates that the issue could be with your Wi-Fi network.
Possible things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Is the wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the performance get better when you’re standing directly infront of the UKO2 internet router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.
Neighbours could be on your wireless network and using up all your UKO2 bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your UKO2 broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your UKO2 internet connection.
There are 3 apps that you can potentially use to analyse your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the devices connected.
Should I get a Wifi booster for my UKO2 broadband?
If you discover that there are wireless coverage holes at your house, a wireless network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to increase your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.
The Wifi network extender simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.
Position the Wifi network booster near the position where your wireless network signal from your UKO2 internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your wireless network signal is dropping down to two signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to determine where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the UKO2 broadband router?
The UKO2 and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that the UKO2 broadband internet router is running on the most up-to-date software.
Most UKO2 internet routers will allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging into the UKO2 broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact UKO2 and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s worth talking to UKO2 to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for UKO2 broadband performance issues in your area and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, contact UKO2 who should be able to conduct the appropriate line tests to check if there is a problem on the UKO2 internet line.
Is the issue due to UKO2 Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the UKO2 broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should contact UKO2 to check your minimum speed.
