Troubleshooting UKO2 internet speed issues

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your UKO2 broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a UKO2 Broadband Speed Test to benchmark your current broadband speed.
You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from UKO2.
You can get this information by checking a UKO2 broadband bill, your UKO2 contract or by contacting UKO2.
Possible causes of UKO2’s slow internet speed
Is it your UKO2 broadband that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The speed issue may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with UKO2’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilisation.
On other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all apps that may have been hogging your systems resources.
Run the UKO2 Speed test on your personal computer and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should provide you with more info to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the UKO2 broadband connection.

Is the wireless network the problem?
The cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network and not the UKO2 broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless network by connecting your PC directly into the UKO2 broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the UKO2 Speedtest again.
If the speed test result improves when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the problem could be with the wireless network.
A few other things to check:
- Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the wireless signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your speed get better when your are standing directly infront of the UKO2 internet router?
Who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How complex is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.
Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all your UKO2 bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your UKO2 broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities over your UKO2 internet connection.

There are three apps that you can potentially utlise to scan your Wifi network to check who is connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software analyse your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a Wifi booster for my UKO2 broadband?
You may discover that there are wireless coverage holes in your home, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wifi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.
The wireless network booster picks up your existing wireless signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi network booster/extender near the position where your Wifi signal from the UKO2 internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it approximately where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to two signal bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to try and establish where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded the UKO2 broadband router?

The UKO2 and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that your UKO2 broadband router is running on the most up to date software.
The majority of UKO2 broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software update by logging on the UKO2 broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the update.
If you cannot do this, contact UKO2 and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to UKO2 to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common reason for UKO2 broadband performance issues in your property and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact UKO2 who will be able to carry out the relevant connection tests to see if there is a problem on the UKO2 broadband line.
Is the performance issue because of UKO2 Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the UKO2 internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should speak to UKO2 to find out your minimum speed.
