Troubleshooting UTV broadband speed issues
Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your UTV internet connection, we recommend that you run a UTV Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current connection speed.
Also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you on your broadband package from UTV.
You can get this information by checking your UTV broadband bill, your UTV contract or by contacting UTV.
Probable causes of UTV’s slow broadband speed
Is it your UTV broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.
The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with UTV’s broadband connection.
If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.
On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should kill all programs that may have been hogging your systems resources.
Run the UTV Speedtest on your personal computer and your mobile to check how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you more info to help determine if the problem lies with your device or the UTV internet connection.

Is your Wifi the problem?
The root cause of the performance problem may be your wireless network and not the UTV internet connection.
You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the UTV broadband router with a network cable and run the UTV Speed test again.
If the performance improves when you are connected using an ethernet cable, this indicates that the problem could be with the wireless.
A few other things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is your Wifi signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when you’re standing right infront of the UTV broadband router?
Who is connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It may be time to update it.
Neighbours could be on your wireless network and using up all the UTV speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your UTV broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your UTV broadband connection.
There are three apps to utlise to scan your wireless network to see who’s connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software analyse your wireless network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.
Do I need a wireless booster for my UTV broadband?
You may discover that there are Wifi black spots in your property, a wireless extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to boost your wireless signal to cover any coverage holes.
The wireless network extender picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi booster where your Wifi signal from the UTV broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Position it approximately where your wireless network signal is dropping down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your property with a mobile phone to find where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the UTV broadband router?
The UTV and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that your UTV broadband internet router is running on the latest software.
Most UTV broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the UTV broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, get in touch with UTV and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it is worth speaking to UTV to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for UTV broadband performance problems in your property and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact UTV who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a problem on the UTV internet line.
Is the performance issue due to UTV broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the UTV broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g over weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should speak to UTV to check your minimum speed.
