How to troubleshoot UTV broadband performance problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your UTV broadband connection, we suggest that you run a UTV Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current internet speed.
You may also want to confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from UTV.
You can find this info by checking a UTV broadband bill, your UTV contract or by contacting UTV.
Probable causes of UTV’s slow internet performance
Is it the UTV internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The speed issue could be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU and not an issue with UTV’s internet connection.
If you are on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM utilisation.
On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully kill all apps that may be using up your systems resources.
Run the UTV Speedtest on your PC and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you more information to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the UTV internet connection.

Is your wireless network the reason for the issues?
The root cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network and not the UTV internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your PC directly to the UTV broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the UTV Speedtest again.
If the speed checker result improves when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this indicates that the issue could be with your internal wireless network.
A number of things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when you’re stood right infront of the UTV internet router?
Who is connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Others could be on your Wifi network and using up all the UTV speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your UTV broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your UTV broadband connection.
There are 3 apps that you can utlise to analyze your wireless network to check who is connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting application WiFi Analyzer
The above apps scan your Wifi network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a wireless booster for my UTV broadband?
If you discover that there are Wi-Fi coverage gaps at your property, a Wifi network extender also known as a Wifi Booster is the best fix to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The wireless booster picks up the existing wireless signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the wireless network extender near where your Wi-Fi network signal from your UTV broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to determine where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the UTV broadband router?
The UTV and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that your UTV broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.
Most UTV broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the UTV broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with UTV and they will be able to do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it’s probably worth speaking to UTV to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for UTV broadband performance problems in your home and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact UTV who should be able to carry out the appropriate line tests to check if there is a problem on the UTV internet connection.
Is it because of UTV broadband congestion?
If you’re finding that the UTV broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. weekends or during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should contact UTV to find out your minimum speed.
