How to troubleshoot Velocity 1 internet speed issues

Velocity 1 Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Velocity 1 broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Velocity 1 Internet Speedtest to confirm your current connection speed.

Also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from Velocity 1.

You can find this info by checking a Velocity 1 broadband bill, your Velocity 1 contract or by contacting Velocity 1.

Likely causes of Velocity 1’s slow internet performance

Is it the Velocity 1 internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many applications are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to over utilisation of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and not an issue with Velocity 1’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilisation.

On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shutdown all programs that may have been hogging system resources.

Re-run the Velocity 1 Speed checker on your computer and your mobile to check how the results differ between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you more information to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Velocity 1 internet connection.

Is your wireless network the issue?

The root cause of the performance issue may be your Wi-Fi network and not the Velocity 1 internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network by connecting your PC directly into the Velocity 1 broadband router with a network cable and then run the Velocity 1 Speedtest again.

If the speed checker result is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with the Wifi.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are standing directly infront of the Velocity 1 broadband router?

Who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Others could be on your Wi-Fii network and eating up all the Velocity 1 bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Velocity 1 internet connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Velocity 1 broadband connection.

Here are two apps that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:

Both apps scan your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wifi network booster for my Velocity 1 broadband?

If you discover that there are wireless coverage holes at your property, a Wifi extender also know as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wifi extender picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the wireless network booster/extender where your Wifi signal from the Velocity 1 internet router is starting to become weaker.

Place it near where your wireless signal is dropping down to two bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to determine where this is.

When did you last upgrade the Velocity 1 broadband router?

The Velocity 1 and broadband infrastructure in general are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that your Velocity 1 broadband router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of Velocity 1 internet routers will allow you to carry out the software update by simply logging into the Velocity 1 broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Velocity 1 and they will be able to do this for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s probably worth speaking to Velocity 1 to request for a router upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Velocity 1 broadband performance problem in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered via cooper phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Velocity 1 who should be able to run the appropriate line checks to see if there is a fault on the Velocity 1 internet line.

Is the issue because of Velocity 1 Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Velocity 1 broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to Velocity 1 to find out your minimum speed.
