Likely causes of Velocity 1’s slow internet performance

Is it the Velocity 1 internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many applications are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to over utilisation of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and not an issue with Velocity 1’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilisation.

On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shutdown all programs that may have been hogging system resources.

Re-run the Velocity 1 Speed checker on your computer and your mobile to check how the results differ between the two devices.

Is your wireless network the issue?

The root cause of the performance issue may be your Wi-Fi network and not the Velocity 1 internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network by connecting your PC directly into the Velocity 1 broadband router with a network cable and then run the Velocity 1 Speedtest again.

If the speed checker result is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with the Wifi.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are standing directly infront of the Velocity 1 broadband router?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Others could be on your Wi-Fii network and eating up all the Velocity 1 bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Velocity 1 internet connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Velocity 1 broadband connection.

This is probably the most common cause for Velocity 1 broadband performance problem in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered via cooper phone lines.
