How to troubleshoot Velocity 1 broadband internet speed

Velocity 1 Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speedBefore you start troubleshooting the speed of your Velocity 1 broadband connection, you firstly need to run the Velocity 1 Internet Broadband Speed Test and also confirm what Upload and Download speed that you have subscribed to.

You can get this info by checking a Velocity 1 bill or contact Velocity 1 to confirm this information.

Likely causes of Velocity 1 slow broadband speed

Is it your Velocity 1 broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many applications are concurrently running on your device that could be utilizing your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Velocity 1 internet bandwidth.

If you are on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On any other device you could try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the Velocity 1 speedtest on your PC and your mobile to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the Velocity 1 internet connection.

Is your Wifi connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless network connection and not the Velocity 1 broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi network being the cause of the issue by connecting your PC directly to the Velocity 1 broadband router using a network cable and run the Velocity 1 speed checker again.

If performance is better when you’re connected via a network cable then this proves that the issue could be with the wireless network connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your wireless signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are stood directly infront of the Velocity 1 broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wifi network?

Neighbors could be on your Wifii network and using up all your Velocity 1 bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.

There are 2 apps that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:

Both applications will scan your wireless network and show you a list of the connected devices.

Check out this tutorial on how to use both applications

Do I need a Wifi network Booster for my Velocity 1 broadband?

If you find that you have Wi-Fi black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wifi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the Wifi signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wifi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the Velocity 1 broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your Wifi signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Velocity 1 broadband router?

The Velocity 1 and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that your Velocity 1 broadband router has the latest software.

The majority of Velocity 1 broadband routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging on the Velocity 1 broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Velocity 1 and they will be able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the Velocity 1 router model you have.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s worth talking to Velocity 1 to request for a router upgrade.

Is the problem external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Velocity 1 broadband performance problem in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Velocity 1 who will be able to conduct the relevant line tests to see if there is a issue on the Velocity 1 internet connection.

Is it due to Velocity 1 Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Velocity 1 internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your Velocity 1 to understand if the service you subscribed to has a minimum speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
