How to troubleshoot VFast broadband internet performance
Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your VFast internet connection, you need to run the VFast Internet Broadband Speed Test and also confirm what Upload and Download speed you have subscribed to.
You can get this info by checking a VFast bill or contact VFast to confirm this info.
Likely causes of VFast slow broadband performance
Is it your VFast broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many applications are concurrently running on your device that could be using your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your VFast internet bandwidth.
If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your processor and RAM usage.
On any other device you could try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been running in the background.
Re-run the VFast speedtest on your computer and your mobile to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of if the problem lies with your device or the VFast broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network connection the problem?
The cause of the issue could be your Wi-Fi network connection and not the VFast broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the Wi-Fi network network being the cause of the issue by connecting your computer directly into the VFast broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the VFast speedtest again.
If performance is better when you’re connected using a network cable then this proves that the issue may be with your Wifi network connection setup.
Possible things to investigate are:
- Are the Wireless channels you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Could your wireless network signal from the router be obstructed?
- Does your performance improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the VFast broadband or wireless router?
Who is connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest Wi-Fi network?
Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fii network and eating up all the VFast bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.
There are 2 applications that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to check who is connected:
Both apps will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a wireless network Booster for my VFast broadband?
If you find that you have Wi-Fi black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender aka a Wifi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.
The Wifi booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the Wifi signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the VFast broadband router is becoming weak. Approxiametly where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded your VFast broadband router?
The VFast and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some customer facing and others internal). Ensure that your VFast broadband router has the most up to date software.
The majority of VFast broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the VFast broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.
If you can’t do this, contact VFast and they are able to either do this for you or guide you through how to do it depending on the VFast router model you have.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it is worth talking to VFast to request for a router upgrade.
Is the fault external (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common reason for VFast broadband performance problem in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact VFast who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a fault on the VFast internet line.
Is it due to VFast Broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the VFast internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact your VFast to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a minimum speed or is a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
Re-testing your VFast internet connection
After the issue has been fixed either by yourself or VFast, re-test your broadband connection using at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the fault is fixed.
