How to troubleshoot ViaSat broadband performance issues
Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your ViaSat internet connection, we suggest that you run a ViaSat Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current connection speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from ViaSat.
You can find this information by checking a ViaSat broadband bill, your ViaSat contract or by contacting ViaSat.
Probable causes of ViaSat’s slow internet speed
Is it the ViaSat broadband that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to consider how many apps are running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to a problem with ViaSat’s internet connection.
If you are on a PC then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and RAM utilisation.
On any other device, you could try restarting the device which should hopefully terminate all apps that may have been hogging system resources.
Re-run the ViaSat Speed checker on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speed test results differ between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you more information to help determine whether the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the ViaSat broadband connection.

Is the Wi-Fi network the cause of the slowness?
The root cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network and not the ViaSat broadband connection.
You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your PC directly to the ViaSat broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the ViaSat Speed test again.
If the speed is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this suggests that the problem may be with the wireless network.
Possible things to investigate:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Is your wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does the speed improve when you’re standing right infront of the ViaSat wireless router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open Wifi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It may be time to change it.
Neighbors could be using your wireless network and eating up all your ViaSat speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your ViaSat broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your ViaSat broadband connection.
Here are 3 apps that you can utlise to scan your wireless network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above applications will scan your Wifi network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wifi network booster for my ViaSat broadband?
You may discover that you have Wi-Fi black spots at your property, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black holes.
The wireless extender simply picks up your existing Wifi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the wireless network booster/extender near where your wireless network signal from your ViaSat internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your wireless network signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to find where this is.
When did you last upgrade the ViaSat internet router?
The ViaSat and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that the ViaSat internet router is running the most up to date software.
The majority of ViaSat broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging into the ViaSat broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.
If you can’t do this, contact ViaSat and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it may be worth speaking to ViaSat to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for ViaSat broadband performance problems in your area and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, contact ViaSat who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a problem on the ViaSat internet connection.
Is it because of ViaSat Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the ViaSat broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should contact ViaSat to check your minimum speed.
