How to troubleshoot Vispa broadband speed problems
Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Vispa broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a Vispa Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current broadband speed.
Also find out the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from Vispa.
You can find this info by checking a Vispa broadband bill, your Vispa contract or by contacting Vispa.
Common causes of Vispa’s slow broadband performance
Is it the Vispa internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.
The speed issue could be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with Vispa’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilisation.
On other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all applications that may be hogging your device resources.
Re-run the Vispa Speedtest on your personal computer and your mobile phone to see how the results compare between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should give you some info to help determine whether the issue is with your device or the Vispa internet connection.

Is the wireless the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network and not the Vispa broadband connection.
You can rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the Vispa broadband router with a network cable and then run the Vispa Speedtest again.
If the performance improves when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the issue may be with your Wifi.
A few other things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is the wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your speed improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the Vispa wireless router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all your Vispa bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Vispa broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Vispa broadband connection.
Here are 3 apps to use to analyze your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above apps analyse your wireless network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Vispa broadband?
You may find that there are wireless black spots at your home, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to increase your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The wireless network booster picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the wireless network booster near the position where your Wifi network signal from your Vispa internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two bars. Walk around your house with a tablet to find where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Vispa internet router?
The Vispa and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that your Vispa broadband router is running on the latest software.
Most Vispa internet routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the Vispa broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with Vispa and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s worth speaking to Vispa to request for a router upgrade.
Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for Vispa broadband performance issues in your area and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact Vispa who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a issue on the Vispa internet connection.
Is the performance issue because of Vispa broadband congestion?
If you’re finding that the Vispa broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak hours.
You should speak to Vispa to find out your minimum speed.
