How to troubleshoot Vispa broadband speed problems

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Vispa internet connection, we recommend that you run a Vispa Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the minimum download speed you have subscribed to from Vispa.
You can get this information by checking a Vispa broadband bill, your Vispa contract or by contacting Vispa.
Potential causes of Vispa’s slow internet speed
Is it your Vispa internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to consider the number of applications are currently running on your device.
The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with Vispa’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilisation.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all applications that may have been hogging system resources.
Run the Vispa Speed test on your PC and your phone to check how the speed test results differ between the two devices.
Hopefully this should provide you with some information to help determine whether the issue is with your device or the Vispa broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the problem?
The cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the Vispa broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your PC directly into the Vispa broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Vispa Speed checker again.
If the speed improves when you’re connected via an ethernet cable, this suggests that the issue could be with your wireless network.
A number of things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Is your Wi-Fi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does your performance get better when you’re standing directly infront of the Vispa internet router?
Who is connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Others could be using your Wifi network and eating up all your Vispa speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Vispa broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your Vispa broadband connection.

There are 3 applications to use to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- Wireless troubleshooting application WiFi Analyzer
The above software analyse your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wifi booster for my Vispa broadband?
If you find that you have Wi-Fi black holes at your home, a Wifi network extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best solution to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wi-Fi network extender picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the wireless network booster/extender near the position where your wireless network signal from your Vispa internet router is starting to become weaker.
Position it approximately where your wireless network signal drops down to two signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to try and establish where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded the Vispa internet router?

The Vispa and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that the Vispa broadband internet router is running on the latest software.
Most Vispa broadband routers will allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging into the Vispa broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, contact Vispa and they will do this for you or alternatively, talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it may be worth speaking to Vispa to request for a router upgrade.
Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Vispa broadband performance problems in your home and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Vispa who should be able to conduct the relevant line tests to check if there is a problem on the Vispa internet connection.
Is the performance issue due to Vispa Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the Vispa broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact Vispa to find out your minimum speed.

Re-testing your Vispa internet connection
After the fault has been resolved either by yourself or Vispa, retest the internet connection using at least two independent Speedtests to ensure the problem is fixed:
