How to troubleshoot Vodafone internet speed issues

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Vodafone broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Vodafone Broadband Speed Test to benchmark your current internet speed.
Also confirm the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Vodafone.
You can get this information by checking your Vodafone broadband bill, your Vodafone contract or by contacting Vodafone.
Possible causes of Vodafone’s slow internet speed
Is it your Vodafone internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with Vodafone’s broadband connection.
If you are on a PC then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilization.
On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shut down all applications that may have been using up system resources.
Re-run the Vodafone Speed checker on your personal computer and your mobile phone to check how the results differ between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more info to work with in terms of if the problem is with your device or the Vodafone internet connection.

Is your wireless network the reason for the issues?
The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless network and not the Vodafone broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your computer directly to the Vodafone broadband router using a network cable and run the Vodafone Speed test again.
If the speed checker result is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue could be with the Wi-Fi network.
A number of things to look further into:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the Wifi signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when you’re stood right infront of the Vodafone internet router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It may be time to update it.
Others could be using your Wifi network and eating up all the Vodafone bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Vodafone broadband connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities using your Vodafone internet connection.

Here are three apps that you can potentially utlise to analyse your wireless network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above applications will scan your Wifi network and produce a list of the devices connected.
Do I need a Wifi network booster for my Vodafone broadband?
If you discover that there are Wifi black holes in your property, a wireless extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.
The Wifi network extender picks up your existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to increase it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi booster/extender where your Wifi signal from your Vodafone broadband router is becoming weaker.
Position it approximately where your Wifi signal is dropping down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to find where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Vodafone internet router?

The Vodafone and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that your Vodafone broadband router is running the latest software.
The majority of Vodafone broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging on the Vodafone broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact Vodafone and they will be able to do this for you or alternatively, talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it’s worth speaking to Vodafone to request for a hardware upgrade.
Is the root cause of the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for Vodafone broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Vodafone who should be able to carry out the relevant connection checks to check if there is a problem on the Vodafone broadband line.
Is the performance issue due to Vodafone Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the Vodafone broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. weekends and during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact Vodafone to check your guaranteed speed.
