How to troubleshoot WebTapestry internet speed problems

WebTapestry Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your WebTapestry broadband connection, we recommend that you perform a WebTapestry Internet Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

You may also want to find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from WebTapestry.

You can get this information by checking a WebTapestry broadband bill, your WebTapestry contract or by contacting WebTapestry.

Likely causes of WebTapestry’s slow internet performance

Is it the WebTapestry internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many applications are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with WebTapestry’s internet connection.

If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM usage.

On any other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully shutdown all apps that may be hogging system resources.

Run the WebTapestry Speedtest on your computer and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more information to work with in terms of whether the issue is with your device or the WebTapestry broadband connection.

Is the Wifi the issue?

The root cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network as opposed to the WebTapestry broadband connection.

You can rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly to the WebTapestry broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the WebTapestry Speedtest again.

If the performance is better when you’re connected by a network cable, this suggests that the issue may be with the internal wireless network.

A few other things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the speed get better when you’re stood right infront of the WebTapestry wireless router?

Exactly who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to change it.

Others could be on your Wifi network and using up all the WebTapestry bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your WebTapestry broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities using your WebTapestry broadband connection.

WebTapestry WiFi no connection

There are three applications that you can utlise to scan your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above software scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.

Should I get a wireless booster for my WebTapestry broadband?

If you find that you have Wifi coverage gaps at your property, a wireless network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black holes.

The Wifi extender picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Position the Wifi booster/extender where your wireless network signal from your WebTapestry broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Place it near where your wireless signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your property with a mobile phone to try and establish where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the WebTapestry internet router?

WebTapestry router upgrade

The WebTapestry and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the WebTapestry internet router is running the most up-to-date software.

The majority of WebTapestry internet routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the WebTapestry broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with WebTapestry and they will perform the upgrade for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long time, it is worth talking to WebTapestry to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for WebTapestry broadband performance problems in your area and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact WebTapestry who should be able to conduct the appropriate line checks to check if there is a problem on the WebTapestry internet line.

Is it because of WebTapestry Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the WebTapestry internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to WebTapestry to check your minimum speed.
