How to troubleshoot WebTapestry internet speed problems

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your WebTapestry internet connection, we recommend that you perform a WebTapestry Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.

Common causes of WebTapestry’s slow broadband speed
Is it your WebTapestry internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e Memory/CPU and not an issue with WebTapestry’s internet connection.
If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilization.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all programs that may have been using up system resources.
Run the WebTapestry Speed test on your PC and your phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should provide you with more information to help determine if the issue lies with your device or the WebTapestry broadband connection.

Is the wireless the cause of the performance issue?
The cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network as opposed to the WebTapestry broadband connection.
You can rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the WebTapestry broadband router with a network cable and then run the WebTapestry Speed test again.
If the result improves when you’re connected by an ethernet cable, this shows that the problem could be with the wireless.
A number of things to check:
- Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the wireless signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the speed get better when your are stood right in-front of the WebTapestry broadband router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and eating up all the WebTapestry bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your WebTapestry internet connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your WebTapestry internet connection.

There are 3 apps that you can utlise to analyze your Wifi network to check who is connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- Wireless troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above apps scan your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a wireless network booster for my WebTapestry broadband?
If you find that you have wireless black holes at your house, a wireless extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to increase your Wifi signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The wireless network booster simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.
Position the Wifi network booster/extender where your Wifi signal from your WebTapestry broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Position it near where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to find where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded the WebTapestry broadband router?

The majority of WebTapestry broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging into the WebTapestry broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.
If you can’t do this, get in touch with WebTapestry and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, talk you through the process.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it may be worth speaking to WebTapestry to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact WebTapestry who should be able to run the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a fault on the WebTapestry broadband connection.
