How to troubleshoot Wi-Manx broadband speed issues

Wi-Manx Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Wi-Manx broadband connection, we suggest that you run a Wi-Manx Internet Speed Test to benchmark your current broadband speed.

Also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from Wi-Manx.

You can get this info by checking a Wi-Manx broadband bill, your Wi-Manx contract or by contacting Wi-Manx.

Probable causes of Wi-Manx’s slow broadband performance

Is it your Wi-Manx broadband that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device.

The performance problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/CPU and as opposed to a problem with Wi-Manx’s broadband connection.

If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory utilisation.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully should shut down all apps that may have been using up your systems resources.

Run the Wi-Manx Speed test on your PC and your phone to check how the results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some information to work with in terms of whether the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the Wi-Manx internet connection.

Is your Wifi the issue?

The root cause of the performance problem could be your wireless network as opposed to the Wi-Manx internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your PC directly into the Wi-Manx broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the Wi-Manx Speed checker again.

If the performance improves when you’re connected by a network cable, this suggests that the problem could be with the wireless.

A number of things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is the wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re stood directly infront of the Wi-Manx wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How complex is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and eating up all your Wi-Manx bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Wi-Manx internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your Wi-Manx internet connection.

Wi-Manx wireless Lagging

Here are 3 applications to use to analyse your Wifi network to check who is connected:

The above applications analyse your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless network booster for my Wi-Manx broadband?

If you discover that there are Wifi coverage holes at your property, a wireless network extender aka a wireless Booster is the best fix to increase your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing Wifi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the wireless network booster/extender near where your Wifi network signal from your Wi-Manx broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your wireless signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to determine where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Wi-Manx broadband router?

Wi-Manx ISP router upgrade

The Wi-Manx and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Wi-Manx broadband internet router is running the latest software.

Most Wi-Manx broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging on the Wi-Manx broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the upgrade.

If you cannot do this, contact Wi-Manx and they will do this for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s worth speaking to Wi-Manx to request for a router upgrade.

Is the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Wi-Manx broadband performance issues in your home and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, contact Wi-Manx who will be able to run the appropriate connection checks to see if there is a fault on the Wi-Manx internet line.

Is it because of Wi-Manx Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the Wi-Manx internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact Wi-Manx to find out your minimum speed.
