Troubleshooting Wyenet internet performance issues

Wyenet Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Wyenet broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a Wyenet Broadband Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from Wyenet.

You can find this information by checking your Wyenet broadband bill, your Wyenet contract or by contacting Wyenet.

Likely causes of Wyenet’s slow broadband performance

Is it the Wyenet internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with Wyenet’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory usage.

On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all programs that may have been using up your systems resources.

Re-run the Wyenet Speedtest on your computer and your mobile phone to check how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more information to help determine if the issue is with your device or the Wyenet internet connection.

Is the Wifi the cause of the slowness?

The cause of the performance issue could be your Wi-Fi network and not the Wyenet broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the Wyenet broadband router using a network cable and run the Wyenet Speedtest again.

If the result improves when you are connected by a network cable, this proves that the problem could be with your wireless.

Possible things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when you’re stood directly infront of the Wyenet internet router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.

Others could be using your Wifi network and using up all your Wyenet bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your Wyenet internet connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Wyenet internet connection.

Wyenet wireless not working

There are 3 apps that you can utlise to analyze your wireless network to see who’s connected:

The above applications scan your Wifi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my Wyenet broadband?

You may find that there are wireless black holes at your property, a Wifi extender also known as a wireless Booster is the best fix to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wifi extender simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s reach.

Place the wireless extender near the position where your Wifi signal from your Wyenet internet router is becoming weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wifi signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to determine where this is.

When did you last upgrade the Wyenet internet router?

Wyenet ISP router upgrade

The Wyenet and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Wyenet internet router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of Wyenet internet routers will allow you to carry out the software update by logging on the Wyenet broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Wyenet and they will perform the upgrade for you or guide you through the process.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long time, it is worth speaking to Wyenet to request for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Wyenet broadband performance problems in your property and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Wyenet who will be able to carry out the relevant connection checks to see if there is a issue on the Wyenet broadband connection.

Is the performance issue due to Wyenet Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Wyenet broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact Wyenet to check your minimum speed.
