Troubleshooting Xifos broadband speed problems

Xifos Internet speed test - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Xifos broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Xifos Internet Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.

It is a good idea to also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from Xifos.

You can get this info by checking a Xifos broadband bill, your Xifos contract or by contacting Xifos.

Potential causes of Xifos’s slow internet performance

Is it your Xifos internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance problem may be due to over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and as opposed to a problem with Xifos’s internet connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilisation.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may be using up system resources.

Run the Xifos Speed test on your PC and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with more info to help determine if the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the Xifos internet connection.

Is the Wifi the reason for the issues?

The root cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network as opposed to the Xifos internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your PC directly to the Xifos broadband router using a network cable and run the Xifos Speed checker again.

If the speed test result improves when you’re connected by an ethernet cable, this proves that the issue could be with your internal wireless network.

A few other things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the speed get better when your are standing directly infront of the Xifos internet router?

Who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wifi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbors could be using your wireless network and eating up all your Xifos speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Xifos broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities on your Xifos broadband connection.

Xifos wireless Lagging

Here are 3 apps that you can use to analyse your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless booster for my Xifos broadband?

If you discover that there are Wifi coverage gaps at your property, a Wifi network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to boost your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wifi booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the Wifi booster where your Wifi signal from the Xifos internet router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to determine where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Xifos broadband router?

Xifos ISP router upgrade

The Xifos and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Xifos broadband router is running on the latest software.

Most Xifos internet routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the Xifos broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Xifos and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it is worth speaking to Xifos to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Xifos broadband performance problems in your property and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Xifos who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a fault on the Xifos internet connection.

Is it because of Xifos broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Xifos broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should contact Xifos to check your guaranteed speed.
