Troubleshooting XILO internet speed problems

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your XILO broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a XILO Broadband Speedtest to measure your current internet speed.

It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from XILO.

Possible causes of XILO’s slow internet performance

Is it the XILO internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance issue may be due to over-utilization of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and not a problem with XILO’s broadband connection.

If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory usage.

On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully shut down all programs that may be hogging your device resources.

Re-run the XILO Speedtest on your PC and your phone to check how the results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you more info to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the XILO internet connection.

Is the wireless network the issue?

The root cause of the performance problem may be your Wi-Fi network and not the XILO broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your PC directly to the XILO broadband router using a network cable and then run the XILO Speed checker again.

If the result improves when you’re connected by a network cable, this indicates that the problem may be with your Wi-Fi network.

A few other things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the performance get better when you’re stood right in-front of the XILO internet router?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your Wifi network and using up all the XILO bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your XILO broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your XILO internet connection.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for XILO broadband performance issues in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact XILO who should be able to carry out the appropriate line checks to check if there is a problem on the XILO broadband line.

Is the performance issue due to XILO Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the XILO broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g over weekends and during the evening, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact XILO to check your minimum speed.
