How to troubleshoot YouFibre broadband performance problems

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your YouFibre internet connection, we suggest that you perform a YouFibre Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current internet speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from YouFibre.
You can find this info by checking a YouFibre broadband bill, your YouFibre contract or by contacting YouFibre.
Potential causes of YouFibre’s slow broadband speed
Is it the YouFibre internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.
The performance issue may be due to over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and not a problem with YouFibre’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM usage.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully should shutdown all programs that may be hogging system resources.
Run the YouFibre Speedtest on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speedtest results differ between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you more info to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the YouFibre broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the performance issue?
The root cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network and not the YouFibre internet connection.
You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by connecting your PC directly to the YouFibre broadband router with a network cable and run the YouFibre Speedtest again.
If the speed improves when you’re connected via a network cable, this suggests that the problem could be with the Wifi network.
Possible things to check:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is your Wi-Fi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are stood right infront of the YouFibre broadband router?
Who is connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.
Others could be on your wireless network and eating up all the YouFibre speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your YouFibre internet connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your YouFibre internet connection.

Here are three apps that you can use to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above apps analyse your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.
Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my YouFibre broadband?
If you find that you have Wi-Fi coverage holes at your house, a Wifi network extender aka a wireless Booster may be the best fix to increase your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.
The Wifi network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the wireless booster/extender near the position where your wireless signal from the YouFibre broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Place it approximately where your wireless signal is dropping down to 2 bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to find where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the YouFibre broadband router?

The YouFibre and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that your YouFibre internet router is running on the most up to date software.
The majority of YouFibre broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging into the YouFibre broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, contact YouFibre and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through the process.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it is worth talking to YouFibre to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for YouFibre broadband performance issues in your home and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact YouFibre who should be able to conduct the relevant connection checks to check if there is a fault on the YouFibre internet line.
Is the issue due to YouFibre broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the YouFibre broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends or evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should speak to YouFibre to check your guaranteed speed.
