TalkTalk is often seen as a more budget-friendly alternative to BT. While BT's broadband speeds are similar to TalkTalk's, TalkTalk generally offers cheaper packages.

However, BT tends to have better customer satisfaction ratings and offers perks like free access to five million BT Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK.

Virgin Media is known for offering the UK's fastest widely available fibre broadband, with speeds up to 1.3Gbps in some areas.

However, its network coverage is not as extensive as BT's since it doesn't use the Openreach network. BT's prices are more competitive than Virgin Media's, and its customer service tends to be highly rated.

Plusnet is another budget-friendly alternative to BT.

Although the two providers offer similar broadband speeds, Plusnet's packages are generally cheaper. However, BT has a more extensive range of products and services and perks like free access to BT Wi-Fi hotspots and BT Sport.

NOW TV offers a cheaper and more flexible alternative to BT TV and broadband, with no contract required.

NowTV customers can choose from various passes that give access to different channels such as Entertainment, Cinema, Sports, Kids, or Hayu. NOW TV also offers broadband speeds up to 63Mbps. However, NOW TV has fewer channels than BT and does not include extras such as BT Sport or Netflix.

BT Broadband and Review

There are different timelines for getting BT Broadband up and running depending on whether you are a new customer or an existing one.

For new customers, BT aims to get your broadband up and running within two weeks, while for existing customers who are moving, it may take up to two weeks or even longer in some cases.

If you are staying at the same address and keeping the same product, such as Broadband, Superfast Fibre, or Fibre 100, it should only take one day to switch on your service. If you are staying at the same address but changing your product, it may take 1-2 weeks.

BT will switch on your service on the day, anytime up to midnight, and will try their best to ensure that you don’t lose service. You can track the activation date and follow the status of your broadband activation online or via the My BT app.

BT Complete Wi-Fi is a solution designed to provide wall-to-wall coverage in your home by utilizing Wi-Fi discs to extend the signal of your Smart Hub 2.

It’s an ideal option for homes experiencing weak or non-existent Wi-Fi signals in certain areas, ensuring you can get online from every corner of your home.

To get the BT Complete Wi-Fi Guarantee, you’ll need to purchase the Complete Wi-Fi package, which includes a new Smart Hub 2 and a single Wi-Fi disc.

This should cover most homes. However, if you still need more coverage, BT will send you up to two extra discs free of charge. If you still can’t get a signal in every room of your main dwelling, you can claim £100 back. The guarantee doesn’t cover outbuildings, gardens, or sheds. You can sign up or upgrade to Complete Wi-Fi by visiting the BT website.

BT’s Hybrid Connect is an optional add-on for their home broadband service in the UK.

It combines a customer’s fibre broadband service with a 4G-based backup connection from EE, providing a reliable and uninterrupted internet connection even if there’s an issue with the fibre broadband connection.

The backup connection kicks in automatically within 90 seconds of a fault being detected, and it works seamlessly with the customer’s Smart Hub 2 router, without requiring them to sign in again to a different Wi-Fi network.

The Hybrid Connect service is available as an add-on and is compatible with BT’s Complete Wi-Fi service. Customers can get online with the Hybrid Connect device as soon as it arrives, even before their fibre broadband service is installed.

The service is powered by EE’s 4G mobile network and is currently available to around 85% of BT’s customers in areas with eligible EE G signal strength.

You can move your BT phone, broadband and TV services all in one go by using BT’s dedicated moving home service.

  • You need to provide your BT account number, current phone number, new address and moving date. You can also take your equipment with you when you move
  • There is no charge for your new connection, and no need to set up a new Direct Debit.
  • You should try to give BT at least two weeks’ notice so they can have everything ready for the day you move in. However, they can support shorter notice periods in most cases.
  • You can check what speeds are available in your new area and decide what’s best for you.
  • If you choose to keep your existing package, you will need to plug in your hub as soon as you get to your new place.

If BT knows that there will be a delay, of more than two days, they will offer you a BT or EE 4G Mini Hub powered by the EE network. And they will give you unlimited mobile data to get you online as quickly as possible. All at no extra cost to you.

You may be able to transfer your old number to your new address, depending on availability. If not, BT will give you a new number.

Here is some information about whether BT TV is worth getting:

  • BT TV is a service that combines BT’s broadband and phone packages with a pay-TV element, which includes BT Sport, Now TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other premium channels.
  • BT TV is only available to customers with a fibre-optic connection, which offers speeds between 36Mbps and 900Mbps, depending on the package and availability.
  • BT TV offers a range of packages that allow customers to add different combinations of channels each month, depending on their preferences and budget.
  • BT TV has a good selection of TV content, especially for sports and entertainment fans, and allows customers to watch online or via the BT Sport app.
  • BT TV also supports 4K HDR resolution and Dolby Atmos sound for some of its content, such as BT Sport Ultimate and Netflix.
BT TV has some drawbacks, such as being more expensive than some competitors, requiring a 24-month contract for most packages
  • BT TV also has a smaller storage capacity (500GB) than some rivals such as Sky Q (1TB or 2TB), and charges higher setup fees (£39.99) than Sky (£20)3.

Whether BT TV is worth getting depends on your personal preferences, budget, and availability.

If you want a lot of great content, especially sports and entertainment, and you don’t mind paying a premium price and signing a long contract, then BT TV might be a good option for you. However, if you want more flexibility, cheaper prices, or better customer service, then you might want to look elsewhere.
