What is Fibre Broadband?
Fibre broadband are connections that are presented to your property through fibre connection part way or all the way from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) telephone exchange.
Fibre optic cables have the approximate width of human hair, and are designed to carry a light signals.
Data is converted to a light signal and fired down the fibre cable.
The light travels down the cable bouncing up and down and does not escape due to the reflective plastic side of the cabling.
What is FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet)?
FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) involves the running of fibre cables from the main telephone exchange to your local roadside cabinet (the green cabinets that you see street side).
A copper cable is then ran from the roadside cabinet to your home or business. The copper cable uses VDSL2 (or similar technology) that is capable of delivering fast speeds over short distances.
The speed of your FTTC connection will depend on the distance of your property from the street cabinet.
What is FTTP (Fibre To The Premises)/ FTTH (Fibre To The Home)?
FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) which is also referred to as FTTH (Fibre To The Home) or FTTB (Fibre To The Building) and involves running of fibre cables from the telephone exchange all the way to your home or business.
FTTP/FTTH (Fibre To The Premises/Home) is the fastest connection type and allows for speed of upto 1Gbps.
The only drawback to FTTP/FTTH is availability due to the cost involved of running fibre all the way to your property. Due to this drawback FTTC tends to be the more available connection type in most cases.
What is the difference between Brownfield and Greenfield sites or premises?
Brownfield sites definition
Brownfield sites have old existing copper lines in place and also have FTTP/FTTH available.
Greenfield sites definition
Greenfield sites do not have any copper lines and FTTP/FTTH is your main connection option.
What is a Cable connection?
Internet service providers such as Virgin Media run cable networks which are a coaxial/fibre hybrid network.
The fibre is run to your roadside cabinet and from thereon a coaxial connection is ran to your property. The Coaxial cable is more resistant to interference and therefore offer faster internet access speeds.
